Illinois Supreme Court Ethics Rules

“The new code, passed by the Illinois Supreme Court, is particularly noteworthy because it provides judges with guidance on how ethics rules apply to the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media,” Pflaum said. The Illinois Supreme Court has adopted a new code of conduct for justice that includes guidelines on the use of social media and updated financial information. The new Code will come into force on January 1, 2023. IJEC President Steven F. Pflaum of Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP said that while Illinois` new code is based on the ABA model, some aspects of it can serve as a model for other states, particularly the sections that clarify and define how judges interact on social media. “The Illinois Supreme Court is committed to promoting the highest ethical conduct of judges in our state,” Chief Justice Anne M. Burke said in a press release. “The Court`s proclamation of a new, modern Code of Conduct for Justice will contribute to this goal by providing judges with clear guidance on their ethical responsibilities both within and outside the judiciary. After years of extensive study, the new code will serve the citizens of our state well for many years to come.
