After my time at the Spanish Football Federation, I received an offer from UEFA, the European confederation responsible for the popular and successful UEFA Champions League, among other things. I accepted the offer and moved from Madrid to Switzerland in 2012 to start my international career in football. It was definitely a turning point for me. Working daily in an international context has given me more opportunities to better understand the industry on a global scale. I worked for UEFA for six great years, during which time we developed a number of legal projects that are still relevant today. One day you may be registered in purely corporate cases under Swiss law, the next day you will discuss antitrust issues related to FIFA`s activities in the United States with your external lawyer based in New York and in the evening you will get in touch with FIFA lawyers in Australia who are working on the corporate structure for the Women`s World Cup, which will take place in 2023. Time never stops for us and it is certainly a challenge to work continuously on so many different time zones that cover FIFA`s activities. Of course, there are a variety of topics in international sports law these days that can be considered relevant or fashionable, but if I were to suggest research topics to young law students, I would focus on two areas: first, the combination of human rights and sport (with particular reference to the fight against doping or the participation of athletes in sport) and second, Corporate governance in the context of sports institutions. In both areas, I believe there is room for major legal research and analysis.
