Law Enforcement Leadership Training California

The FBI National Academy (NA) is one of the oldest police leadership programs in the world. It began in 1935 on the recommendation of the Wickersham Commission to standardize and professionalize police organizations in the United States. Since then, thousands of middle and senior law enforcement executives have attended the 10-week course held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Each NA session also includes up to 35 international students and police officers from abroad. A typical session involves 265 agents. This course is referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice`s Office of Community-Oriented Policing Training Portal, also known as COPS. It focuses narrowly on managing active shooters and similar incidents that local law enforcement agencies may encounter. The 4-hour online course is free for all participants. An exam at the end of the course can be attempted three times. Those who pass the exam will receive a certificate. Texas agents can qualify for four hours of TCOLE credit after passing. NA graduates are eligible to join the FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA), an organization created to facilitate networking, training, and collaboration between NA graduates and the police organizations they work for.

The FBINAA organizes its own annual training conference and regional meetings with trainings. LESLTP is an eight-day course for supervisors and prospective supervisors at all levels. It focuses on “human capital development disciplines” and emphasizes communication, understanding, conflict management and other human resource management skills. Participants will learn about the Dominance, Incentive/Influence, Submission/Stability, Compliance (DISC) behaviour assessment tool and how it can be used in a law enforcement culture. Other topics of the LESLTP are public speaking, well-being, conflict management, ethical and moral behaviour, and change. Both sworn and non-sworn enforcement officers can register for the course. The Los Angeles High-Density Drug Trafficking Area (LA HIDTA) training program page lists dozens of courses in current fields ranging from firearms repair and maintenance to covert rescue operations. Several leadership courses are scattered among these offerings, such as Leading High Adventure Assignments, Authentic Leadership for Women in Law Enforcement, and Leading with Influence. Most courses are offered by private training companies that have provided HIDTA with the offerings for convenience. As policing evolves, so does dependent technology.

Most people who move from a line to a supervisory or administrative role in a law enforcement agency freely admit that the transition from officer or assistant to sergeant or lieutenant is astounding after going from private citizen to police officer. Yet many states do not require newly appointed or future police chiefs to complete leadership training. For this reason, various training providers have launched police leadership programs.
