Victoria Legal Aid Graduate Program

AALN works with government and legal organizations to provide paid and legal work experience to AALN members. Ms. Moy is a past chair of the Civil Policy Group and a former board member of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. She is a member of the New York State Bar Association`s President`s Committee on Access to Justice, the Legal Aid Committee, and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Ms. Moy is also a co-convener of the New York Diversity Coalition, a group of legal staff and managers dedicated to the issue of diversity in the legal aid community. Up to four winter practicums are offered each year to law students of Aboriginal descent. The program is offered in June and July during the university`s winter break. AALN`s annual Business Outreach Workshop aims to develop our members` understanding of trade through a competency-based workshop led by business lawyers from a leading Australian law firm. The workshop aims to support African Australian students applying for seasonal internships and graduate positions. This workshop is a fantastic opportunity to demystify and refine the concept of “commercialization” through a competency-based seminar led by business lawyers from a leading Australian law firm. Students with an interest in business law, as well as those applying for a seasonal internship or graduate position in the coming months, will be particularly helpful in this session to demonstrate their business acumen in applications and interviews. The 2020 Business Outreach Workshop was sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills, an official sponsor of the AALN Association.

Michael Ziegelaar, Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), presented at our Business Outreach Workshop on July 16, 2020. Michael is responsible for the Melbourne Corporate Group and has over 20 years` experience advising on some of Australia`s largest commercial transactions. Michael`s 10 Golden Rules of Business Awareness highlighted the practical skills that anyone seeking a career in business law should consider and develop. She has also served on the Board of Directors of In Our Own Voices, an organization dedicated to the many needs of the LGBT community, and is currently an advisor to the Board of Veterans Drive, a national program that helps women veterans and widows obtain vehicles. And a member of the local NAACP and national NAACP and a local activist for racial inequality. At the start of the program, you must be admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria or eligible for admission to Victoria under the principle of mutual recognition. By participating one day a week for the duration of the three-month program, students enhance their professionalism as well as their relevant written and oral communication skills to work directly with clients. The clinic is designed to provide hands-on legal experience and training to students to support their professional development and increase their appeal to potential employers. Given the diverse complexity of legal issues and direct contact with clients, this is a senior internship that can only be applied to students who have already completed a WEstjustice internship. The most rewarding aspect of my job is having the chance to see significant progress from clients who are motivated to tackle truly complex issues in their lives. By helping to manage the stress of a client`s legal issues, I believe we can help clients focus on these broader issues such as substance abuse, homelessness or separation from an abusive relationship.

As part of this program, you will conduct research, work on documents, and assist state administrators` legal teams. There may be opportunities to visit VCAT with the supervising lawyer. John Cano graduated from Ferrum College with a BA in Political Science and Spanish who joined LAJC in August 2022. In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and puppy, playing football, basketball, tennis and watching his favorite sports teams Manchester City, Barcelona and the Cowboys. Applications for the 2022 African Australian Legal Internship Program are open. Options are also available in Corporate Services for those interested in non-legal means. Please visit bit.ly/3Fl9LBs to apply! Please note that the program is incredibly competitive and there are few positions available. Therefore, we recommend that you consider other legal roles that may arise in our 15 offices. We also encourage candidates to consider the many benefits of working in a regional office.

“I encourage all new lawyers to apply to this program and join the Victoria Legal Aid team. You will have a fantastic start in your legal practice, leading to a successful legal career. “The New Lawyer Program is a unique opportunity that has allowed me to develop and grow as a new lawyer. The program has given me every opportunity to become the best advocate I can be to help Victoria`s most disadvantaged people. I believe the program has given me the skills and knowledge base to provide the highest quality legal services to Victoria Legal Aid`s clients who earn nothing less. Lillian M. See below for more information. “I started the new lawyer program during COVID-19, so the induction process was a little different from previous years and the new lawyers all started online. Taking on a new position in the middle of a pandemic was troubling and I wasn`t sure what to expect. From day one of the program, I experienced a certain level of support, orientation and safety. My supervisors and mentors all want me to succeed and the training to be done right. The New Lawyer Program is offered to lawyers for two years in the first year after admission. Although you do not need to be admitted to practice at the time of application, you must be admitted before or immediately after the start of the program. The number of positions varies for each annual admission, with positions also available for applicants who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

The “Listen to Me” program provides legal triage to ensure that legal issues are well understood and that the case is adequately supported. This can be an internal referral to a specialized clinic or an external referral. Your participation in the program provides an important professional benefit by developing your legal skills to be better equipped for real-world practice. Kelly joined the Legal Aid Justice Center in 2019 as a consumer rights lawyer. Kelly is co-author of “Internal Exile: Collateral Consequences of Conviction in Federal Laws and Regulations” (American Bar Association 2009). Kelly received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and her law degree from Drake University Law School, where she served as a Public Service Scholar. The program runs three times a year for a period of four months. I think one of the most frustrating limitations of my job is that no matter how hard we work or how much we care, there is a limit to what we can do for our clients, who will often continue to struggle to overcome really complicated legal and non-legal issues in their lives.

Often, it can be easy to get frustrated by the reality of the limited resources invested in funding programs and services that would change people`s lives in our legal system (and in many cases, divert them from it in the long run).
